What Are Freezer Adhesive Labels?
Standard self-adhesive labels use a pressure-sensitive adhesive formulated for ambient temperatures - typically between 10°C and 35°C. Below that range, the adhesive stiffens, loses tack, and fails to bond to cold or wet surfaces. Freezer adhesive labels use a low-temperature adhesive that remains flexible and tacky even when applied to surfaces at or below 0°C, including chilled packaging, frozen goods, cold storage boxes, and refrigerated transport containers.
They are the correct label choice whenever a label needs to be applied to a cold surface, stored in a cold environment, or survive the transition between cold and ambient conditions without peeling or flagging.
Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer - Which Freezer Label Do You Need?
All our freezer labels are available in two print technologies. The right choice depends on your printer type and how long the label needs to remain legible.
Direct Thermal Freezer Labels
Direct thermal labels print using heat-sensitive paper - no ribbon required. The thermal printhead activates the coating directly, producing a black print. They are the simpler, lower-cost option and suit applications where labels are applied and used within a reasonable timeframe. However, direct thermal prints are sensitive to prolonged heat and UV exposure, so they are best suited to cold chain and storage applications where the label is not exposed to high temperatures or direct sunlight for extended periods. Browse our direct thermal freezer labels.
Thermal Transfer Freezer Labels
Thermal transfer labels print using a ribbon that transfers ink onto the label face under heat. The resulting print is more durable, more resistant to heat, UV, moisture, and abrasion, and has a longer shelf life than direct thermal. They are the better choice for labels that need to remain legible for longer periods, withstand handling in demanding environments, or carry barcodes that will be scanned repeatedly. Common Applications for Freezer Labels
Freezer adhesive labels are used wherever labelling needs to work reliably in cold conditions:
- Cold storage and logistics - warehouse racking labels, pallet identification, and box end descriptions in cold rooms and freezer warehouses
- Food production and processing - batch codes, use-by dates, and product identification on frozen or chilled food packaging
- Pharmaceutical and medical - cold chain compliance labelling on temperature-sensitive products and samples
- Shipping and courier - address and despatch labels applied to chilled or frozen shipments before transit
- Retail chilled and frozen sections - shelf edge labels, product identification, and promotional labels in refrigerated display units
Perforated Freezer Labels
Several sizes in our freezer range are available with a perforation between labels. Perforated labels are easier to tear cleanly by hand without cutting equipment, which is useful in environments where operators are wearing gloves or working at speed. Where you see "perforated" in the product title, the perforation runs across the full width of the label at the gap between each label on the roll.
Core Sizes and Printer Compatibility
Our freezer labels are available on 25mm, 38mm, 44mm, and 76mm cores to suit the widest range of thermal label printers. If you are unsure which core size your printer requires, check your printer’s specification sheet or contact us and we can advise. For further guidance on label sizing and specifications, see our self-adhesive labels size guide.
Other Specialist Label Types
If you need labels that perform in specific or demanding conditions beyond cold storage, we also stock waterproof labels for wet or outdoor environments, tyre adhesive labels for high-tack rubber surface applications, tamper evident labels for security applications, and shipping and courier labels for despatch and logistics. For a broader view of what we offer, see our specialist labels range.
